Brenda Beck was a guest speaker at a Tamilnadu Cultural Society of Canada. Members of the group gathered in Toronto on September 7th to celebrate the graduation of the first set of students trained in an experimental Tamil language-learning course the organization has recently sponsored. The topic of Dr. Beck’s talk was the beauty of the Tamil language,
Dr. Beck’s address used the metaphor of a lovely parrot (read the story HERE). She spoke of the many languages of India being like a bunch of lovely birds living in a great banyan tree, and the fact that Tamil can be seen as one especially beautiful bird in this flock.
Dr. Beck also spoke about the challenge of learning Tamil while living in Canada, especially if Tamil is not the language spoken daily in one’s home environment.
She then enjoyed the honor and the pleasure of handing out certificates (along with several other speakers) to the students who successfully graduated from the Tamilnadu Cultural Society’s new course at the end of August. See the blog post below for more detail on the content of her speech.
