Had lots of fun today making three story presentations at the Milliken Mills Public School, Toronto, all drawing on key events described by the Legend of Ponnivala. I first spoke to 1-3rd graders, then to 4-6th graders and finally to 7-8th graders – each time pointing to links between this ancient tale and events occurring around us in today’s world. I found it rewarding to try to “package” the story in a meaningful way for three different age groups. Young listeners are always responsive and a joy to work with, as I continue to try to spread an appreciation for the significance of this story among (mostly) new, immigrant Canadians. Afterwards the teachers (and students) presented me with a plaque and a very warm thank you for my efforts.
